Suppression of the Shebelynka Uprising (1829)
The forcible suppression of a mass anti-serfdom uprising in Sloboda Ukraine that broke out within the system of military settlements: "The servile condition of the military settlements' inhabitants caused the Buh Cossacks' uprising of 1817, the Chuhuiv uprising of 1819, the Shebelynka uprising of 1829, and others"[1]. The scale is recorded by the EHU: "Up to 3 thousand peasants gathered in Shebelynka," and "on May 30, 1829 a bloody reprisal against the defiant began, during which 109 people died"[2].
