Aggressors may carry out the physical extermination of a population not on the basis of the victims' political views or ethnicity, but totally — solely by virtue of their presence in a given territory. To wipe pockets of resistance off the face of the earth, carpet bombing of residential areas, deliberate mass shootings of residents, and other methods may be employed.
Total massacre of the civilian population: "Funck slaughtered more than a thousand people in the small town of Terey (Tereyska sloboda) and burned the town down, and also burned Dryhalov (Nedryhailiv)… and ordered everyone encountered to be killed, so as to instill horror in others"[1]. "In total, about 15 thousand Ukrainians died in the Baturyn tragedy, including all the women and children"[2][3].
Total extermination of the defenders: when Perevolochna was taken, "All the Zaporozhians and inhabitants were killed (only 12 people were taken alive), and the neighboring kurins were also burned and slaughtered"[2].
Deliberate mass killings of people without regard to their ethnic origin, solely on the basis of their Ukrainian citizenship and affiliation with the Ukrainian state[4].
