Aggressors may betray the trust of the Indigenous people: promise peace, safety, pardon or the freedom to develop their culture, hide behind the red cross, the white flag, the emblems of international missions, the other side's uniform or civilian clothing. People lay down their arms, come out of hiding, let the attackers come close, return from emigration or make themselves known openly, and the colonizer arrests, deports or kills those who believed. This is how the colonizer strips people of the protection of the law of war: trusting the white flag and the red cross becomes a risk to life. In war, international law prohibits such deception as perfidy (Article 37 of Additional Protocol I to the Geneva Conventions), and separately prohibits the misuse of the red cross, the white flag and the UN emblems (Article 38).
